You cannot schedule an Instagram Story from inside the Instagram app — there is no native scheduler for Stories the way there is a built-in planner for feed posts. Everything that schedules a Story runs through one of two surfaces outside the app: Meta's own Business Suite, or a third-party tool that talks to Instagram's Content Publishing API. Both work, both are free to start, and both share the same catch — the interactive parts of a Story (polls, question boxes, link stickers, music) can't be pre-loaded by a scheduler, so part of the Story still gets finished in the app at post time.
This is the hands-on version, in order: confirm your account is the right type, pick the path that matches how hands-off you want publishing to be, build the asset to Story spec, schedule it in Meta Business Suite or a third-party tool, handle the stickers and music that won't carry over, and verify the Story actually posted. If your Stories are video and you want them readable with the sound off, pair this with [adding accessible captions to Instagram Stories](/how-to/add-captions-to-instagram-stories); if your source footage isn't 9:16 yet, start with [resizing video for Instagram](/how-to/resize-video-for-instagram).
The steps
Confirm your account can schedule Stories at all. Scheduling Stories requires an Instagram professional account — Business or Creator — not a personal one, and for most tools it must be linked to a Facebook Page. Both Business and Creator accounts can be auto-published; a personal account cannot be auto-published by any scheduler at all and only ever gets a reminder. What forces a reminder even on a professional account is the Story itself — add a sticker, link, text, or music and the tool falls back to a tap-to-post notification regardless of account type (more on that in the next step). If your account is personal, switch it to professional in Settings before anything else. There is no in-app Story scheduler regardless of account type, so you will be using an outside surface either way.
Pick your path: auto-publish or reminder. Two things schedule Stories. Meta Business Suite is free, Meta-owned, and auto-publishes Stories to a connected Instagram account — scheduling lives on the desktop web version (mobile support varies by source and region, so check the current Business Help Center if that matters to you). A third-party tool (Buffer, and similar schedulers) connects through Instagram's API and either auto-publishes — for a plain image or video on a professional account — or sends a push notification at the scheduled time that you tap to finish posting in the app, which is what happens on a personal account or any Story carrying a sticker, link, text overlay, or music the tool can't pre-load. Choose auto-publish for a plain image or video you want to go out untouched; choose reminder/notification publishing for any Story you intend to dress up with interactive stickers it can't pre-load.
Build the Story to spec before you schedule. Design for the Story canvas, not the feed. Stories are full-screen vertical at 9:16, 1080×1920 px — landscape or square media gets letterboxed or cropped, so reframe it first. Keep critical text and faces away from the top and bottom edges where the profile row, timestamp, and reply bar sit. Each Story card is a separate 24-hour unit, so if you're scheduling a multi-card sequence, prepare each frame as its own file and plan the order. A video Story that's meant to be watched muted needs its captions or key text burned into the frame, since Stories don't render a feed-style caption.
Schedule in Meta Business Suite (desktop). Open business.facebook.com on a computer and go to Planner (or Content). Open the create menu and choose Create Story. Select the Instagram account (and the linked Facebook Page if you want it cross-posted). Upload your image or video, then set a date and time and click Schedule — Business Suite lets you queue Stories well in advance, and the scheduled card shows up in the Planner calendar where you can edit or delete it before it goes live. At the chosen time it auto-posts and, like any Story, disappears 24 hours later.
Schedule in a third-party tool. In a tool like Buffer, open the publishing/queue view, select your Instagram channel, click Create Post, and choose the Story type. Drag in your media (tools typically let you upload and reorder several clips at once), do any light cropping the tool offers, then either add it to the queue's next open slot or pick a specific date and time to schedule. Save it as a draft if it still needs sign-off. If your account can't auto-publish, the tool will flag that it'll send a mobile notification instead — install the tool's app and keep notifications on so you don't miss the post window.
Handle the parts a scheduler can't pre-load. This is the step people get wrong. Instagram's API won't let any scheduler attach interactive stickers — polls, question boxes, countdowns, quiz stickers, link stickers, or location tags — to a scheduled Story, and music tagging isn't available on scheduled Stories either. (Plain @mentions without a sticker are the one exception the API does allow.) You have two honest options. Either bake the equivalent into the media itself before scheduling (text, a static design, your own graphics) so the auto-post is complete, or use reminder/notification publishing and add the real interactive stickers by hand in the app when the alert fires. For a Story whose whole point is a poll or a swipe-up link, reminder publishing is the only route that keeps those features.
Verify it posted — or finish it when the reminder fires. After an auto-publish time passes, open your profile and confirm the Story ring is live and the card looks right; check the scheduler's queue for any failed-post flag (a disconnected account token is the usual cause). For reminder/notification publishing, treat the alert as the actual publish step: tap it, the app opens with your media pre-loaded, add your stickers/link/music, and share. If you don't tap, nothing posts — a scheduled reminder is a prompt, not a guaranteed publish.
Common gotchas
Expecting a native in-app scheduler. Instagram has none for Stories — every method here runs through Meta Business Suite or a third-party tool, never the Instagram app itself.
Assuming every account auto-publishes. A personal account can't be auto-posted at all — only a reminder. A professional account (Business or Creator) can be auto-posted, but only for a plain image or video; add a sticker, link, text, or music and it falls back to a tap-to-post reminder regardless of account type. Check which applies before you rely on hands-off scheduling.
Scheduling a Story that needs a poll, link, or music. The API can't attach interactive stickers or licensed audio — either burn the design into the media or use reminder publishing and add them by hand at post time.
Uploading landscape or square media. Stories are 9:16, 1080×1920; anything else gets cropped or letterboxed, and key text drifts under the UI at the top and bottom edges.
Trying to schedule a Story from Meta Business Suite on mobile. Story scheduling there is primarily a desktop-web feature; mobile support is inconsistent, so check the current Meta Business Help Center before relying on it from your phone.
Treating a reminder as a guaranteed post. If the notification fires and you don't tap it, the Story never publishes — keep the tool's app installed with notifications enabled.
Where Kompozy fits
Reread the steps and notice how little of this is actually scheduling. Clicking Schedule in Business Suite takes ten seconds; the work is steps three and six — having a 9:16, caption-ready, on-brand Story asset in hand, and having enough of them to keep the Stories ring lit every day. A daily Stories habit is a supply problem long before it's a scheduling problem, and that is the half [Kompozy](/) is built for. It is a full AI content generation and multi-platform publishing engine, not a repurposing add-on, so it produces the vertical assets this tutorial assumes you already have.
Concretely, Kompozy generates Story-shaped content net-new. Point it at one source — a talk, a product note, a performing post — and [Clipped Shorts](/glossary/clipped-short) reframe it to 9:16 with the key line burned into the frame (the muted-readable spec from step three), while face-locked [Persona Shorts](/glossary/persona-shorts) create avatar video for the days you filmed nothing, so the ring never goes dark for lack of raw material. For the non-video cards, Quote Graphics and brand-exact [Carousel and HyperFrames](/glossary/hyperframes) outputs render clean vertical frames you can drop straight into a scheduled Story. A single [Persona Brief](/glossary/persona-brief) holds one voice and look across all of them, so a week of Stories reads as one creator instead of a grab-bag.
Where Kompozy stops is exactly the boundary this page is about, and it's worth being precise. Kompozy produces and schedules content across the eight social platforms plus blog and email through [Autopilot](/glossary/autopilot) behind a per-post review gate — but it does not add Instagram's interactive stickers for you, because, as step six explains, the API forbids any tool from doing that. Polls, link stickers, and music stay a manual in-app tap at post time no matter who generates the asset. So the honest division of labor is this: Kompozy removes the production ceiling that makes a daily Stories cadence collapse, hands you finished 9:16 assets, and keeps the rest of your calendar publishing itself; you keep the ten-second schedule click and the interactive-sticker tap that only a human in the app can do. Starter runs $199/mo (5,500 credits) for a solo creator feeding one or two platforms; Pro is $499/mo (18,000 credits, 9 platforms and full autopilot) for a team holding a daily cadence everywhere at once; Enterprise is available through Contact Sales.
Frequently asked questions
Can you schedule Instagram Stories directly in the app?
No. Instagram has no built-in scheduler for Stories inside its own app. To schedule one you have to use Meta Business Suite (free, on desktop) or a third-party scheduling tool connected through Instagram's API. The in-app planner that does exist is for feed posts and Reels, not Stories — so any workflow that schedules a Story is happening outside the Instagram app.
Do I need a business account to schedule Stories?
You need a professional account — Business or Creator — not a personal one, and usually linked to a Facebook Page. A personal account can never be auto-published by a scheduler, only sent a reminder. Business and Creator accounts can both be auto-posted, but only for a plain image or video — add a sticker, link, text, or music and even a professional account falls back to a reminder you tap to post. Switch a personal account to professional in Settings first.
Can a scheduled Story include a poll, link sticker, or music?
Not through the scheduler. Instagram's Content Publishing API doesn't allow interactive stickers (polls, questions, countdowns, link stickers, location) or licensed music to be attached to a scheduled Story — plain @mentions without a sticker are the one exception it does allow. Your options are to bake a static equivalent into the media before scheduling, or use reminder/notification publishing — the tool pings you at post time and you add the real stickers by hand in the app.
Will a scheduled Story post automatically or do I have to tap?
It depends on the account and the Story, not just the tool. On Meta Business Suite or an auto-publish-capable third-party tool, a plain image or video on a professional (Business or Creator) account posts automatically at the scheduled time. A personal account, or any Story carrying a sticker, link, text overlay, or music, falls back to reminder/notification publishing instead — you get a push alert and tap to finish posting in the app. Confirm which mode you're in before assuming a Story will go out untouched.
